Lock Screen widgets for habits on iPhone

The smallest surface on the phone, seen more often than any other. Worth spending carefully.

iphone 333 words of 1 400 planned

You look at the Lock Screen dozens of times a day without deciding to. That makes it the single best place to put a cue, and the single worst place to put anything complicated. There is room for a circle, a rectangle the width of a few words, or an inline string next to the date. That is it.

The design constraint turns out to be useful. A Lock Screen habit widget cannot show you nine habits, so it has to show you the one that matters today, or a single number that summarises the rest. A ring at 3 of 5. A count of days. A completion percentage. Anything more and it becomes decoration you stop parsing.

There is also a real difference between the Lock Screen and the home screen in what a tap can do. Lock Screen widgets do not support the same interactive buttons, so a tap unlocks and opens the app. That means the Lock Screen is a reminder surface, not a logging surface, and the apps that pretend otherwise are wasting the slot.

This guide covers what fits in each of the three shapes, which single metric is worth showing, how this pairs with a StandBy display on a bedside charger, and how to set the whole thing up in about four minutes.

Outline

Status: outline. The introduction above is finished copy. Everything below is the section plan for the full draft, targeted at about 1 400 words.

  1. The three shapes. Circular, rectangular and inline, with what genuinely fits in each.
  2. Reminder, not logging. What a tap does, and why that changes the design.
  3. Picking the one metric. Ring, count or rate, matched to what you are trying to change.
  4. StandBy on a bedside charger. The overnight use case, and the widget that suits it.
  5. Focus modes. Different Lock Screens for work and evening, with different habits on each.
  6. Setup, step by step. Four minutes, with the two settings people miss.
