Notifications with ADHD: fewer, louder, and at the right hour

Twenty reminders a day trains you to dismiss reminders. That is the only thing they reliably teach.

adhd 318 words of 1 400 planned

Notification habituation is not an ADHD specific effect, but the consequences land harder when your phone is already producing more alerts than most and dismissing has become automatic. A reminder you swipe away without reading is worse than no reminder, because it costs attention and delivers nothing, and it teaches your thumb that this class of alert is noise.

The fix is unpopular because it involves deleting most of them. One or two habit reminders a day, attached to the habits that genuinely need a prompt, at a time when acting is actually possible. A reminder to meditate at 14:00 during a meeting is not a reminder, it is an interruption that also makes you feel bad.

Two mechanical details help more than the general advice. Timing should follow the cue rather than the clock where the platform allows it, so a location or a device connection beats a fixed hour. And the text should name the smallest version of the action, because “Meditate” is a project and “Sit down, one minute” is a thing you can do while reading the notification.

This guide covers how many to keep, how to choose which, how to write the text, how Focus modes change the calculation, and what to do about the habits that a notification will never fix.

Outline

Status: outline. The introduction above is finished copy. Everything below is the section plan for the full draft, targeted at about 1 400 words.

  1. Habituation, briefly. Why the twentieth alert of the day does nothing.
  2. Cutting to two. A method for deciding which habits keep a prompt.
  3. Cue-based over time-based. Location, connection and app-open triggers, where available.
  4. Writing the text. Naming the smallest action, with ten rewritten examples.
  5. Focus modes. Letting the right ones through without opening the gate for everything.
  6. Habits notifications cannot fix. And what to change instead.
